Future Predictions – Business Structure
Expectations of Future Business Settings
With the
exciting onslaught of many new technologies, the future looks to become a more
customized and individualized experience. To stay relevant and engaging
business structure will have to evolve. This is how I believe businesses will
evolve.
Engagement: People are constantly
looking for a career which is fulfilling and engaging - this will continue in
the future. To keep key employees, businesses will evolve to ensure engagement
and productivity. Engagement happens when an employee is surprised, intrigued,
and challenged – not shocked, provoked or alarmed. Based on this, the best
businesses will enhance the relationship between an individual and their
productive outputs. Case and point on driving fulfillment – the renewed and
growing entrepreneurial spirit of the American public. Additionally, to ensure
engagement the best businesses will challenge the inventiveness of its
employees – combining intelligence, communication, adaptation, innovation,
analysis and creativity.
Roles/Responsibilities: New and
evolving business will be less silo-ed to enhance productivity; customize personal
development and development; and to keep up with the speed and evolution of the
market. There will be less people that do a single role or responsibility.
Positions are already becoming an amalgamation of responsibilities and this
will become further formalized. Marketing becomes public relations or customer
service. Sales becomes customer service and marketing. Finance becomes
marketing and business development. Engineering becomes customer service and
sales. Based on these transitional areas, there will be further definition and
further role integration. I do not think that businesses will follow the route of Bharti Airtel and shrink the entirety of the business to its core responsibilities, outsourcing the rest of the activities to other companies whom specialize on a particular function. There will be a consolidation and focus on critical activities to create efficiency, enhance the spread of ideas, improve capabilities, and react faster to ever-changing markets, competitors and economies.
Work/Life: With the free, open spread
of all information the work/life balance will be further melded. The
productivity of employees will continue to increase with the integration and
implementation of software automation. All of one’s life will be managed
through the networks of information where they can be monitored. Everything
from money to stress will be managed through sensing and software resources,
which can be integrated into both work and home life. Value will be based on
efficiency, customization and integration of this software. If the market
proves efficiency, the business value of efficiency will drive the removal of
commuting. Parenting and home relationships will create further information and
control. Parental control and monitoring will become more widespread with the
advances in monitoring and tracking through sensors and electronics. Work and
life, among other things, will become more customized and individualized.
